Veeam Availability`Suite 9.5 Update 3a

Two weeks ago, we saw the release of Veeam Backup and Replication version 10a. Veeam Backup & Replication 10a is the newer build of version 10. This update also includes all fixes from v10 Cumulative Patch 1 and v10 Cumulative Patch 2 for v10, and supersedes those patches.

What’s New

Veeam Backup and Replication 10a brings support for:

  • Microsoft Windows 10 version 2004
  • Microsoft Windows Server, version 2004
  • Linux Kernel version 5.7
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 8.2
  • CentOS 8.2
  • Oracle Linux 8.2 (RHCK)
  • Oracle Linux 8 (up to UEK R6)
  • Ubuntu 20.04
  • Debian 10.4
  • OpenSUSE Leap 15.2
  • Fedora 32 (up to kernel 5.7.7)
  • VMware vCloud Director 10.1

Microsoft Windows 10 version 2004 and Microsoft Windows Server, version 2004 are supported as guest OS, as Hyper-V servers, for the installation of Veeam Backup & Replication components, and for agent-based backup with the Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows 4.0.1 (included in the update). Recent Azure Stack versions are also supported, if the additional registry settings are set.

Starting in version 10a, based on the recommendation from Microsoft, the RefsEnableLargeWorkingSetTrim registry value is now automatically set upon creating a Windows Server 2019-based backup repository.

Changes in licensing

Veeam decided to make NAS backup free for the backup of small datasets, by allowing to protect the first 250GB of data from any file source at no cost. To achieve this, v10a will only consume a license for each full 250GB set of data protected, whereas v10 consumed a license for incomplete 250GB sets as well.

The File version archiving option of NAS backup is now available regardless of the Socket license edition when backup servers have both Socket and VUL license installed. Previously, this feature required the Enterprise Plus edition.

Based on requests from customers who are required by policies and regulations to purchase perpetual software licenses, the Veeam Universal License (VUL) is now also available with the Perpetual contract. However, Subscription remains a significantly more economically attractive option.

Concluding

Veeam Backup and Replication v10a is a big release for Veeam Backup and Replication and includes over 1200 minor enhancements and fixes.

Veeam Backup and Replication implementations running version 9.5 Update 3 (build 9.5.0.1536) can be upgraded to version 10a (10.0.1.4854), if the correct licenses are available.
