On-premises Identity-related updates and fixes for September 2024

Even though Microsoft’s Identity focus moves towards the cloud, Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2019 and Windows Server 2022 still receive updates to improve the experiences and security of Microsoft’s on-premises powerhouses. Additionally, as Windows serves as the unified endpoint in most organizations to access cloud functionality, identity-related improvements in these client operating systems also positively affect the experiences and security.

This is the list of Identity-related updates and fixes we saw for September 2024:

 

Windows Server

Windows Server 2016

We observed the following update for Windows Server 2016:

KB5043051 September 10, 2024

The September 10, 2024, update for Windows Server 2016 (KB5043051), updating the OS build number to 14393.7336, is a monthly cumulative update. It does not include Identity-related improvements.

Windows Server 2019

We observed the following update for Windows Server 2019:

KB5043050 September 10, 2024

The September 10, 2024, update for Windows Server 2019 (KB5043050), updating the OS build number to 17763.6293, is a monthly cumulative update. It does not include Identity-related improvements.

Windows Server 2022

We observed the following update for Windows Server 2022:

The September 10, 2024, update for Windows Server 2022 (KB5042881), updating the OS build number to 20348.2700, is a monthly cumulative update. It does not include Identity-related improvements.

 

Windows

Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2

We observed the following update for Windows 10, version 21H2 and 22H2:

KB5043064 September 10, 2024

The September 10, 2024, update for Windows 10, version 22H2 (KB5043064), updating the OS build number to 19044.4894 (Windows 10 21H2) and 19045.4894 (Windows 10 22H2), is a monthly cumulative update. It does not include Identity-related improvements.

KB5043131 September 24, 2024 Preview

The September 26, 2024, update for Windows 10, version 22H2 (KB5043131), updating the OS build number to 19045.49947 (Windows 10 22H2), is an optional preview update.

This update includes one identity-related improvement that can be previewed. This identity-related improvement will come with the October 8, 2024, update. In the context of Microsoft Entra Single sign-on (SSO), people signing in with certificates are prompted less with the notice that the European Digital Markets Act (DMA) requires. The prompt, read:

 When you sign in, we use your account to sign you in to other Microsoft apps and services

This prompt shows too often. Its prompt occurrences are reduced.

Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2

We observed the following update for Windows 11, version 22H2 and 23H2:

KB5043076 September 10, 2024

The September 10, 2024, update for Windows 11, version 23H2 (KB5043076), updating the OS build number to 22621.4169 (version 22H2) and 22631.4169 (version 23H2), is a monthly cumulative update. It does not include Identity-related improvements.

KB5043145 September 26, 2024 Preview

The September 26, 2024, update for Windows 11, version 23H2 (KB5043145), updating the OS build number to 22621.4249 (version 22H2) and 22631.4249 (version 23H2), is an optional preview update.

This update includes one identity-related improvement that can be previewed. This identity-related improvement will come with the October 8, 2024, update. In the context of Windows Identity Protection, people no longer need to enter their credentials more than once for Outlook and other encrypted email apps. People will be prompted for their PIN one time only. Before addressing this issue, people were prompted for their PINs each time they open an encrypted email message.
