A quick look at the Sunrise Calendar app

Reading Time: 5 minutes Now that Microsoft has purchased the Sunrise Calendar app, it's probably a good idea to take a closer look to that app and see what we are or will be dealing with before everyone panics (again). The Acompli Outlook app for iOS and Android (from now on referenced as just the Outlook app) has received praise regarding it's functionality and usability, but also a lot of criticism on security and compliancy. A major issue is the temporary caching of data and

Issues with Unified Contact Store in combination with Lync on-premises and Exchange Online

Reading Time: 2 minutes I've encountered an issue that popped up while I was testing a move from Exchange On-premises to Exchange Online (EXO) while Lync Server 2013 remained on-premises due to Enterprise Voice. Outlook Web Access (OWA) from Exchange Online can be integrated with on-premises Lync, this way OWA users can see presence and have limited IM functionality just like what's possible if both products are on-premises. For this to work you'll need Lync Edge servers because OWA EXO will act as an

No, Windows Phone ActiveSync is not on par with OWA for Devices

Reading Time: 3 minutes Recently I came across this Twitter exchange: @WayneHRiddle You don't need it for WP. Native app handles all of that functionality. — Ben Rudolph (@BenThePCGuy) January 17, 2015 I've heard this argument before, that the Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) implementation in Windows Phone doesn't require an OWA for Devices app (or MOWA as is the official acronym) like iOS has (for iPad and iPhone) and what is currently in preview for Android. Although the Windows Phone 8 ActiveSync implementation doesn't have the

Disable Offline OWA in Exchange 2013

Reading Time: < 1 minute Although the Offline OWA functionality in Exchange 2013 is a great addition for those that cannot use Outlook (Anywhere with Cached Mode), but are frequently without internet. However, as the browser database in which Exchange OWA stores it’s information isn’t encrypted, it can be a security issue. It can be turned of via the Exchange Admin Center (EAC) via Permissions>Outlook Web App Policies and then edit the policies by double-clicking them. Navigate in the pop-up window to Offline Access and

I will be presenting at the NGN Exchange evening event on 25th November

Reading Time: 2 minutes On the 25th of November the Dutch usergroup NGN (Netwerk Gebruikersgroep Nederland) will organize an Exchange themed evening event and I'm one of the speakers. I'm extra excited as it will be held at the OGD ICT Diensten head office in Delft, my employer! My session will be about Exchange and mobile devices, focused on ActiveSync but also on Outlook Web App and the OWA App for iPad/iPhone. A very interesting and currently relevant topic, if I say so myself

Back from TechEd NA 2013: Thoughts on Exchange and BYOD

Reading Time: 4 minutes *** Updated 9 juli 2013: See the end of this article *** Back from TechEd North America 2013 and almost recuperated from my jetlag (7 hours difference), some of the bits and pieces get their place and new thoughts are formed. Having seen the keynote (see it here) and the new features added in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, combined with knowledge I’ve blogged about earlier some new thoughts formed on Exchange and BYOD. For years we have

Exchange 2013 OWA Mailbox policy issue cause of OWA error?

Reading Time: 4 minutes Within Exchange 2013 you can have OWA (Outlook Web App) Mailbox policies, in which an Exchange Admin can determine which features within OWA are available to users. By default, there's a default policy with all options enabled, but you can have more policies and configure them at will and assign them to Mailbox-enabled users according to the organization's needs. In this case we wanted to completely disable the Text Messaging option, as it offers no additional functionality for this organization. Disabling it

What is the ‘Outlook App for Exchange’ in Exchange 2013 Preview?

Reading Time: 3 minutes After digging into Exchange 2013 Preview ActiveSync in my previous post, I was making some Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) policies and just playing around. Yeah, I have a bit of a soft spot for ActiveSync Suddenly I noticed something very interesting in the Exchange Admin Center. I’ve made a screenshot: Did you notice it? Maybe a close up? Outlook App for Exchange. Not Outlook Web App. Outlook App for Exchange. It took a while to sink in. During and after writing

Exchange 15 OWA Offline and Extensible?

Reading Time: 2 minutes A few hours ago Mary-Jo Foley posted a blog in which she states (among other things not mentioned here) that the next version of Exchange (codename Exchange 15) could get an offline OWA. A requirement would be IE10. Considering Windows 8 tablets, this could be quite the competitor for Microsoft's own ActiveSync (EAS, also incorporated in all versions of Windows 8). It would depend on the functionality while in offline mode; it’s only reasonable to assume functionality is limited when

Can’t change OWA password at first logon via Threat Management Gateway?

Reading Time: 2 minutes During the first stages of delivering services of our newly built infrastructure to end-users, we came across an annoying issue. Exchange was the first to be accessed, but specifically through Outlook Web App (OWA). As the users where migrated from eDIR and GroupWise, they would get credentials from us. As a security measure we wanted to make a password change at first logon mandatory. I knew there were issues with Exchange 2010, but they were resolved with Service Pack 1.
